Maggie Meister Master Class

Please enjoy these photos of some of Maggie's beadwork and note that what will be created on the master class will be different and unique to this class and you!

This 4-day master class with Maggie Meister is a unique opportunity to learn from one of the worlds most renowned and respected bead artists, teachers and writers.

Don't think of this as a class with a set project but instead the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from the now retired Maggie as she shares with you her knowledge & expertise to help you to create a unique piece of beadwork.

But Maggie puts it better than we ever could:

"Reflecting on my interests throughout my life (bear with me as I turn 70 this year!), I have always been drawn to patterns (both geometric and symbolic), architectural elements and of course History and Archaeology. My father played a huge part in developing my interests listed above. He was always taking us to museums, talking about ancient cultures and how engineering/art played such a role in history. I am so glad he lived long enough to see me develop my passion for this and using beads to express myself. He was always so fascinated to talk about the beading process and how those tiny little things could create structures.

It turns out that when he was a young boy someone gave him a loom and beads and he loved playing with them.

It was only when I discovered seed beads and moving to Italy that my inspiration came to fruition. However, before Italy, I learned about combining stitches from the legend Carol Wilcox Wells in both her classes and books.

My hope for this workshop is that you will learn to translate your interests (focusing on architectural elements) into beadwork. I hope that you will look at a structure and its elements that captivate you and how can we work together during the workshop days to translate them into jewelry/decorative structures with seed beads.

I hope to send out a questionnaire prior to the workshop to get a feeling of what inspires you - color, structures, patterns, and what you hope to learn during the workshop. The handout will cover how to use various stitches to create structures/components and how they can be used and combined to create jewelry. I will also introduce you via references from artists in many mediums who have done this and will bring my favorite samples. I encourage you to send me images of what structures/designs (not beaded images!!!) that interest you.

Many of my designs from the past have been inspired by architecture such as: Chicago Pendant, Pantheon Bracelet, and Romanesque tassel to name a few. The instructions for the basic structure some of these will be included in the handout and discussed in the workshop".

Prerequisites:

  • Intermediate to Advanced; working knowledge of peyote stitch, square stitch, herringbone and cubic right-angle weave as the basics will not be covered for these stitches! Brick stitch instructions will be reviewed in the workshop.

Maggie Meister

Maggie's love of ancient history, colour and patterns has followed her throughout her life. She uses seed beads, gemstones, focal beads, and a variety of beadweaving stitches - Peyote, Right Angle Weave, St. Petersburg, to name just a few- to translate designs found in mosaics, frescoes, architecture and jewellery into sculptural bead art to wear.

Maggie has taught and continues to teach workshops nationally and internationally throughout Europe. Her work has been shown in London, Milan and Naples and has been featured in ORNAMENT MAGAZINE, Beadwork Magazine, Bead and Button, and a variety of books. She has written a book, CLASSICAL ELEGANCE, for Lark Books as part of their Master Beadweaving Series.
